Garr's Rental & Feed will present its popular Scarecrow Workshop on three consecutive weekends this fall, Roy Garr, co-owner and president, recently announced. During the 90-minute workshops, families can build their own life-size scarecrows, straw-filled creations suitable for use as an outdoor autumn or Halloween decoration.

"The workshops are so popular that we are presenting 10 opportunities for families to join the fun this year. There will be three sessions on each Saturday, and one Sunday session," Garr said. Families can only participate in one workshop; one adult must accompany every three children in a family.

The 2010 Scarecrow Workshops are scheduled for:

Saturday, Oct. 2 at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 9 at 9 a.m, 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 16 at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Space is limited, and advanced reservations are required. The workshop fee is $20, which includes materials to build and decorate the scarecrow. A portion of the fee will benefit Charis Health Center of Mt. Juliet, a nonprofit clinic staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses and others that provides health care at a reduced rate to the working uninsured in Wilson County.

Families must provide clothing for their scarecrow: a long-sleeved, button-up shirt and one pair of pants (overalls are preferred). Garr's Rental & Feed will provide the instruction and all scarecrow accessories, including a straw hat, the frame and stuffing. Additional items - such as pumpkins, corn stalks, mums and straw bales - will be available for purchase. When making a reservation, a family must select the size of its scarecrow (child-size or fully grown) and select a standing or seated scarecrow. Reservations will be accepted beginning Sept. 4; please call 754-2777.

"The workshops fill up every year, so we encourage families to make reservations early so that they won't be disappointed," Garr noted. He added that "do-it-yourself" scarecrow kits will be available for $20 for families unable to attend the workshops or for participants who want to make more than one scarecrow. Workshop information will also be posted on the Garr Rental & Feed website.

This year, Garr's will also have a professional photographer at the workshops to take photos of families with their scarecrows. Cost for a 5x7 photo is $10. Families are welcome to bring their own cameras as well.

Garr's Rental & Feed, a family-owned business, is located at 11620 Lebanon Road in Mt. Juliet. It is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is open Sundays seasonally.

Beginning on Wednesday, June 16, The Roxy Theater in Lebanon will begin hosting 'Free Movie Wednesdays' for children and their parents, according to Anita Sanders, general manager of The Roxy.

"We're going to be offering this every Wednesday morning through the end of July," Sanders explained. "School's out, and a lot of families are looking for a budget friendly family activity. We just want to give back to the community that has meant so much to us for almost six years now, and we've always taken great pride in being Lebanon's hometown theater, offering up excellent customer service with a touch of Southern hospitality."

Each Wednesday, the doors at The Roxy will open at 9:30 a.m., and the week's free movie will begin showing promptly at 10 a.m. on two screens in digital format. Seating is available for approximately 460 guests and will be available on a first come, first served basis, Sanders said.

Free Movie Wednesdays kicks off on June 16 with a showing of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which finds America's favorite singing chipmunk trio dealing with the pressures of school, fame and a new rival group known as The Chipettes.

WB&T's Family Entertainment Series, which includes three nights of movies and more, will begin with a free showing of the movie The Sandlot and live music from the Zach Allen Band on Thursday, May 27. Music begins at 6:30 p.m., and the movie will start at dusk. There will be special activities for kids, and children are encouraged to wear their favorite cap or jersey to receive a savings coupon from WB&T's School Bank program.

The Family Entertainment Series will take place on the west lawn adjacent to Wilson Bank & Trust's Main Office at 623 West Main Street in Lebanon.

The first installment of the series will be hosted by the staff at Wilson Bank & Trust's Castle Heights Avenue North office.
